".....The Cincinnati playhouse in the park was founded in 1959 by college student Gerald Covell and was one of the first regional theaters in the United States". "Located in Eden Park, the first play that premiered at the playhouse on October 10, 1960, was Meyer Levin's "Compulsion". The playhouse has maintained their regional and national reputation in the theater community for bringing prominent plays to Cincinnati as well as hosting national premiers such as Tennessee Williams' "The Notebook of Trigorin" in 1996 and world premieres such as the Pulitzer Prize-nominated "Coyote on a Fence" in 1998 and "Ace" in 2006....
There are two locations for "Playhouse in the Park" and we were privileged to visit the picturesque location known as the "Original Shelterhouse" where it all started... The two theaters for the Playhouse in the Park are the larger Robert S. Marx Theater and the smaller Thompson Shelterhouse. The Playhouse is among the members of the League of Resident Theaters. In addition to a full 10 months season of plays, the playhouse also offers acting classes and programs for children. In 1973 to 1975, the Playhouse had the distinction of being the first professional regional theater to be led by Harold Scott... Cincinnati playhouse in the park has been the recipient of many awards. These awards also include the Tony award for Best Regional Theater and also a Tony award for their revival of "Company", which won "Best Revival of a Musical". The production was directed by John Doyle and also won Drama Desk, Outer Critic's Circle and Drama League Awards for Best Revival of a Musical.
Truly a park setting surrounded by the beauty of "Mother Nature, We see the Shelterhouse stage and seating re/theater's audience"
"In Eden Park as you approach the general area---a familiar sign"
"At the entry of Playhouse in the Park re/Shelterhouse & Pavilion"
"The beautiful park's walkway down toward the theater and stage"
"With a performance on this stage---weather can be a factor"
"A frontal view of the stage from the audience's perspective"
"..... The playhouse features two theater spaces. The 626-seat Marx Theater seats the audience in a semi-circle around the thrust stage and does six main stage productions each year. The Playhouse's Thompson Shelterhouse, adjacent to Marx Theater, is a more intimate space used----- for smaller productions & both these theaters------ have their own individual seasons"...."This a complimenting ingredient in a great Eden Park".
